How profotable would Dev consider the game is?

Postby donatas081294 » Sun Feb 03, 2019 8:46 pm

How profitable would the developers cosnider this game since the store was introduced.

1.) A full time job with with either living wage or minimum wage.
2.) A part time job with either living wage or minimum wage.
3.) A seasonal job (3 months per year) either living wage or minimum wage.
4.) A weekend job either living wage or minimum wage.
5.) A volunteer with some minor paid bonuses

Also why the heck not the amount of time put into the game out of these same options.

Just wondering the ratio of effort and time vs reward

Loftar likely puts in quite a few hours per week and Jorb also works fairly hard on some of the patches that require a lot of new animations/objects. If you want to consider forum management as part of their weekly hours Jorb picks up quite a bit of the slack in that way.

How many hours per week is anyone's guess but I'd say it likely varies.

I get the impression that Loftar is usually at the very least pondering how he'd like to do/change things at all times while Jorb likely rolls out of bed on a Tuesday afternoon, highlights a few easy additions from his notepad to present to Loftar and then has a small panic attack once he realizes that he needs to make yet another store hat for the next day.

The rest of the week is likely spent with his family, drinking tea, and having sudden and unexpected bursts of anxiety about the next Hat Day:tm:

Generally developing games is not very profitable. They both could most likely make more money doing pretty much anything else, I doubt that they work at the game full time. Its not always about the money.
I think their revenue is around 500k SEK. I don't think that's enough money for two to live in Sweden.

Now that is in my head, and I just can't get rid of it!

I can think of some jobs that don't pay as well. Crack dealer... burger flipper...
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

"As a reference, the salary for a McDondald's cashier is hovering around 101 to 110 Swedish Krona, or roughly 13.56 USD per hour." (2017) (from first page of search results, without clicking on the actual link). Basically, different countries have different attitudes to the value? dignity? of labour and where possible pay relative to that. On the other hand, probably in Sweden they have to pay more income tax than I do.

If you count out our hourly wage over ten-ish years, it's not so hot. If every day were reset day, it'd be pretty good. Overall, we're at about break even (Which is really good! Most game developers aren't.), and grateful for anything and everything. We have some hopes that, if we keep building, eventually that might pay off. I don't believe, for example, that there is an intrinsic reason why we couldn't have an order of magnitude higher player count.

There have been times -- 2016 was a very bleak year -- when we have considered our options. Apart from the money, the thing thas has concerned me the most over the years is the opportunity cost we pay when working on this over something else, but the freedom in working on it has also always been a big draw for the both of us.

These past days have, either way, helped a lot, and I think it's safe to say that our spirits are high right now, so big thanks are due to everyone who have used the store, or supported us in any other way, if only by simply playing. It means a great deal.

We would have made more money with real jobs.

I'll leave it at that.
