Question for people who don't like permadeath

Postby Ants » Wed Jan 22, 2020 4:59 am

So a lot of people are afraid of getting raided or having their characters killed.

But how do you feel about world resets? Nobody ever complains about them even though they do more damage than a raid. If you get killed you can inherit your credos and some stats but if the world resets, you gotta start from scratch. You literally can't play Haven without having your hard work wiped out one day.

Why do most carebears seem to feel like being killed by other players is terrible but getting killed by the devs is fine?

because dying to your boat dying 2 second in to the ocean is so much more memorable and enjoyable than me kidnapping them and forcing them to swim to their deaths. players bad! pls wipe so i can quit 1 week in to the world once again!
see homo sexuality trending,. do not do that.

I mean it depends on the context I think.

For EVERYONE to be simultaneously griefed by the devs resetting the world? That really shits my pants, but everyone is feeling the same thing.

To be killed at random, sucks, but I don't think that's what people are usually worried about. I've seen how some groups operate, and to potentially be repeatedly griefed and robbed by the same group carries a different weight than a world reset or a "I got caught chopping a tree by someone who kills first and asks questions later".

I'm glad that we can inherit our characters though.

And a lot of players don't think, "Maybe I should fucking move" lol

World resets reset the world. Not just the progress I made, not just the progress you made - the world is still open and unclaimed, there are barely any settlements, I can't just teleport to whatever market exists this world to immediately get goods at a quality level that would take me ages to get on my own for cheap, every evidence of activity you come across indicates the presence of an active player (not someone who played four months ago), and so on.

The experience of a new world is very different from that of a world that's already completely built up and just endlessly raising quality. That experience is worth sacrificing my progress for, even when I'm still actively playing.

(In addition, world resets often happen when I'm not active, while permadeath by definition happens while you're active and value your character. Though I have been active at the time of world resets before, and then the above applies.)

EDIT: Ah, should mention that I'm not opposed to permadeath myself. This is just why I don't perceive a wipe as a negative experience, whereas death is a negative experience (though one that IMO adds to the gameplay).

They could also form alliances and try to fight back against the griefers. A lot of people seem to forget that this is an MMO and that interacting with others can be very beneficial.

Hm, good point.

Because on world reset these noobs lose less than the experienced raiders with big villages.
Its hard to complain about being able to experience the most fun part of the world again though. Even for the carebears and noobs its more fun than late world.

They've stopped playing a long time ago before that!

Somebody kicking your ass is worse than you somehow injuring yourself by accident, even when the outcome of accident is more severe!

More like too stubborn to read the writing on the wall and get gone before it gets even worse, I think... at least, that's what I've read into posts I've seen on the forums in the past.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
