How to find Thingwalls

Postby Scilly_guy » Wed Apr 07, 2021 12:33 am

Heya, so I saw a post where someone noticed that Thingwalls have regions on the realm overlay. My first thought was that they would be Voronoi Regions:

So by exploring with the realms overlay I could find a border between regions, follow that and mark two points of it on my map. Assuming I know where one Thingwall in either of the regions is, I know that the border is at the midpoint between them and perpendicular to them.

By using a pair of pieces of paper (something with a right angle and something with a straight edge), held up to my monitor it is easy to make a guess where an neighbouring Thingwall is.

That may not be the best description and I can go into more detail if people want/need but it is fairly straightforward to find new Thingwalls using this method.

This was the post I have been waiting for, thank you. I will employ this at once.

This seems to be working out fine for the most part, but what am I supposed to here?

My guess is that you have found the corner of three, and two of them have very similar, or even the same colours. I found one coloured blue next to one coloured green, it was very hard to see the join. But then again my theory might be wrong, there could be an edge to the region's, but I doubt it. Perhaps the custom client Wizards could add a button to change the colours, it wouldn't need to change them between reloads, just for that session, random would be fine too, you could press the button until can see this border.

I'm not sure but it might be possible to colour a Voronoi diagram using only 4 colours, so I don't see why there is ever a border between similar coloured regions.

Turns out it was just two adjacent realms that have the same colour for some reason. Myrrog and Manhaven, if that helps the devs figure out how that happened.

Checked them out, and it turns out they are in fact not the same color. If there is a problem here, it's merely that the chosen colors interact fairly poorly on that specific tileset, but if you look closely, you can see the difference. I may have to revise the coloring a bit.

The fact that [0,0,0] is not the same color as [1,1,1] don't takes in account that monitors (and graphic cards for that matter too) can differ a lot in how good they are in showing small color changes.
(effect also depends on color lightness)

Just add some realm border-line feature until a less ambiguous and more global working solution is found.
Some soft dotted line if you like it to be less mundane than a simple black continues line.

Or simply an automatic check that two bordering areas aren't similar enough colors.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Still leaves where the save boundary might be between making two colors not to similar.
On top of additional effects that terrain colors might add to it.

A realm border line bypasses all potential bad coloring problems.
(Would also bypass any color blindness problems, just to add one more benefit that I doubt the dev are keen on digging into.)
