"Hats and Subs are not important"

Postby Lotyc » Mon Sep 30, 2024 9:51 am

First, I want to express my excitement for the upcoming Steam release. I truly believe that this move will help the game reach a broader audience, build stronger communities, and become more successful in the long run.

That said, I do have a concern regarding the decision of items, such as hats, tokens, and sketches, and not allow them to carry over to the Steam version. I understand that this may not be a priority for the game's development, as the developer mentioned in a recent stream. However, this issue is very important for many long-time supporters who have invested not just money, but countless hours into collecting and trading these items.

I’ve shared an image showing everything I’ve purchased in the game from the store, not including the hats I’ve traded for using real money. I’m aware that RWT is a concern, but all of these trades took place on the official Discord, where both developers are present. Many people openly discuss real money prices for hats there, and there has never been an indication that this is against the rules.

For many players, these items—especially rare or unique hats—are more than just cosmetics. They symbolize status and dedication. When you see someone with a rare hat from an earlier version of the game, it shows that they, or someone they know, has been deeply committed to the community, investing both time and resources to support the game. I know that I'm not the only one who has paid for a Gold subscription without actively playing through the entire world. I did this to support the game and continue building my collection of hats, and I was happy to do so.

Some players in the community may not place value on subs, but there are many of us who see them as a way of showing support, even when we aren't playing actively. Removing these items and subscriptions erases the status and meaning that players have built up over the years, and that’s what makes this decision particularly painful.

Now, what is going to happen? I don’t believe this will divide the community because ultimately, everyone wants to play on the most active server with more players. It’s hard to imagine anyone sticking with a less populated one. But what if I want to continue collecting more hats for my collection? Do I have to choose between Steam and the normal server to buy a Gold subscription? What if I choose wrong and end up buying hats for an account that ends up on a server nobody plays? Do we have to subscribe to both just to be safe? That would cost over €400 per year if I want to get all the hats, which is a lot, especially when compared to other MMO games with subscription models.

In the end, we all want the same thing—a thriving game with a vibrant community. I hope these concerns can be addressed so that we can move forward together, with a sense of appreciation for both the game's future and its history.

Thank you for your consideration.

Why do you have so many hats?

This ain't an anime, so who do you think you are, Hatake Kakashi?
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

If Jorbtar add a way to move non-steam hats/tokens/sketches to Steam version, I am fairly sure Steam Community Market prevents selling those items in their marketplace since they are bought outside of Steam's eco-system. I might be wrong but I recall reading such information somewhere, correct me if I'm wrong.

Having a way to merge Seatribe accounts and Steam accounts would provide a way to sync hats/other stuff between non-steam and steam version of the game since generating keys to redeem on Steam is not viable, those keys could end up in black market and certainly most of the people will sell their hats/verified status keys etc. for real life currency.

I'd make it so;
Make possible to sync Seatribe -> Steam and Steam -> Seatribe.
Syncing provides access to verified status/hats/tokens?/sketches.
Seatribe -> Steam hats/tokens/sketches not tradable on Steam marketplace.
Hats/tokens/sketches bought on Steam tradable on Steam marketplace.

In case it may not be obvious as the devs never bother to make such matters clear, currently there is no “official” discord for this game. They are all run by members of the community and not once have any of them ever been designated as official, nor should they be.

RMT is bad and hats are dumb anyways, the majority of them hardly even fit the setting.

This is just a trial run, testing waters. In 4 months this might be a massive flop and instead of trying to not make it that you want them to spend countless hours trying to get your precious hats over to the steam version. And what happens in 4 months when it becomes a stupid unviable version of the game, you want them to spend all that time bringing them back into the original environment?? I get that they can save half the time now doing it now over doing it later, but they have bigger things on their plates over items that don't effect game play.

They still have to announce what game changes they made. How existing subs will work outside of steam, or heck, even if or how new subs will work in the steam game, all they really spoke on was that we all might have to be reverified.

How about you give it 5 months, let's the steam version drag out and see the outcome everyone has literally cried and begged for for the last year+

Maybe as an alternative the owners make a vote system to our account page that allows us to pick 1 hat to bring over to the steam version (half to tell the vets apart from the new players) a hat that just gets set and locked onto all your players as a whole.

Everyone begged and begged and told them how great it can be but it seems like everyone didn't realize how much work it's going to take just the TWO of them. Give them the time they need, as everyone points out how they like to take 4 months of the year off.... Seems like they don't probably have been planning this for months. Treat them better or GTFO

I get where you’re coming from, but as a developer myself, I can’t agree with your take. The idea of "spending countless hours trying to get your data from one database to another" isn’t as difficult as you’re making it sound. It’s not like this is a new challenge in the gaming world. Plenty of games on Steam use external registrations or logins, and they seamlessly integrate data. The hats already exist in the game—it's just data, a simple true/false check for whether you have the hat or not. Jorb even spawns items during streams, so it’s clear they can manage these with ease. The problem here isn't that it's hard; it's just a matter of choosing to do it.

Also, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t say I won’t support the game or play the Steam version—I absolutely will. I’ll probably buy whatever they put on Steam because I like the game and want to support the devs. I understand this is a fresh start, but as they said in the stream, both servers will continue to get the same updates. So the question is, will the same hats be available on Steam and the normal server?

Your suggestion about allowing only one hat to transfer doesn’t make much sense to me. If they can manage merging Steam and normal accounts' data, why limit it to just one hat? And honestly, are you seriously trying to make an analogy about racism when it comes to noobs vs. veterans with Haven & Hearth hats????

Of course, I’ll play the Steam version, and I’ll be one of the first to write a extensive positive review because this game deserves it. But that still doesn’t answer my main concern. If after five months the Steam version flops, do we lose everything on that server? If you chose to support the Steam version, you could be punished by losing all the items you got there. On the other hand, sticking to the normal server might mean you miss out on what’s offered on Steam. The only way to ensure you don’t lose anything is to buy two subscriptions, and that’s not cheap.

Finally, saying this is treating the devs poorly feels unfair. I’ve bought everything they’ve released, supported them with the biggest subscriptions, and never complained. Now, I’m simply raising an educated concern about what could happen, and I don’t see how that’s a bad thing.

The reasoning that S1 is a new experience that warrants re-purchasing store items is laughable. They're not even bothering to adjust the time it takes for stuff like realms, credos, mine levels, cheese, etc, when they originally wanted a 3-4 month world. A decent portion of the game is nearly non-existent 3 months in.

Do we even know if Steam is going to have Hats from the Start? I think Hats should just be disabled for S1 other than a 'Pioneer' hat everyone gets for playing S1. and later maybe the Veterans get one for migrating/merging the account
so this one time at band camp.............
