Do the arrows hitting walls take into account height difference? So can you just stand on a cliff next to a base and shoot over the wall that way? or even just terraform a tile to the highest setting and stand on top to get an angle over the wall?

So, useless.

that was the implication, yes... maybe bodkin arrows would help, lower damage, better armour pen, I dunno, I'm quite happy with bows being mainly hunting tools but I guess it'd be nice for them to have more combat use, especially if larger, walkable walls are to be implemented.

I'm not okay with that at all :( I mean, ffs, what period was it in which bows were considered useless and iron and steel weapons inferior to guys running around punching down walls with their bare fists? I think it was the DBZ era right? Where is my fancy orange gi then?

bows were pretty useless against people with plate mail thats why crossbow were made so it can penetrate it and it was mainly used for close combat while bows were used for long range

Have a mass of archers outside an enemy's
base and outside of their render distance.
keep aim at the gate and send up a random
noob looking guy or just wait. Gate opens,
arrows go in, guy dies. Lack of teleporting
makes the patient archer a sure way into
a base.

They were not as good as they were against a person without armor. They weren't 'pretty useless.' Even the best full plate (which as near as I can tell isn't what is in the game) has gaps, which a decent armor can plink pretty easily from close range, and which volleyed fire will inevitably find from long range. On top of that from close enough with the right arrowheads all the plate in the world won't protect you fully (at least the thin ass shit you can actually move around in without a horse).

And that still doesn't address the fact of archery being useless against more or less EVERYONE. Or of unarmed combat even being a THING in a setting where steel blades exist. It's kinda silly to even try and come up with a justification for haven's combat balance other than the fact that the devs like the idea of stupidly strong fist fighters and don't much care for archery.

... that they were movie stars? The whole of history... did you forget? I'll not even address jackie chan, since he's not particularly impressive, but even bruce lee against a moderately skilled swordsman in a fight to the death would be taken apart (literally) if he was armed with nothing but his hands and feet. Swords are better than fists, and that's a fact, no matter what popular culture will tell you. Bringing your fists to a swordfight is more or less the same as bringing a knife to a gunfight. Yes there are very very very narrow situations in which you can win if the guy with the superior weapon is incompetent, like in extreme close range (which the swordsman would never allow you to approach), but assuming similar or even close skill levels the sword is going to win over the fist 99/100 times.

That's just fact. There's no reason to argue it. The sword takes all the strength that can be applied to unarmed fighting and add hard sharp metal to the equation.
