Am I missing something? Ore smelting

I get 2-3 bars with heavy earth.

Is that with deep artifice?

So I've read around and correct me if I'm wrong in deciphering the different discussions.

When making ore into metal bars the skills steel making and metallurgy help with forging iron bars.

Iron Ochre is halfway decent ore to find.

So why, after mining 25 iron ochre, having steel making and metallurgy, did I get only 2 bars of metal.

That is pretty normal. You shouldn't expect to put in 25 ore and get 23 bars. For Iron Ochre with all of the skills (excluding Deep Artifice) you're looking at about a 10% success rate. Which would be 2-3 bars per 25 ore.

With deep artifice I average 1.3 bars a smelter for heavy earth, i still get loads that are empty.

I both mine my ore and load my ore smelters.

Same here, the only thing my alt does it put the coal in.

I cant seem to get basic mechanics after getting stone working and metal working...

I must be getting insanely lucky with both HE and IO. I get 3-6 bars per smelt with IO, and 2-4 bars with HE. Both throw the occasional mulligan.

I only have tunneling and metallurgy.

You'll need wheelwrighting.

That is pretty insanely lucky, yes. Can you give estimates on how much ore you've smelted?
