Didn't jorb say that movement speed has nothing to do with their aggro and that was something players had invented on their own?

No, I garbled that in my head, they said that torches and fire have no effect on bats but players seem to think they do (or did). Where did we get any confirmation that movement speed affects bat aggro anyway?

Yeah I think that might be the post I was referring too but for some I reason I had recalled inferring that it was always possible to completely avoid combat with them if you're walking slow but I may just be crazy.

At crawling speed you'll never get aggroed at more than 5 tiles distance, I think.

Until that one time it does happen and you lose your character to 4 bats.

My miner got aggro'd on crawl speed from ~8 tiles away and gang banged by 4 bats down to 15 hhp or so. It's not really worth trying to sneak by um :P

If you run, they build up IP and use higher damage attacks. If you get agro and let them knock you unconscious, you can walk away. At least without an armor this works, if it takes them a while to KO you, they still might gain IP. I normally only get 2 and 3 damage deep cuts. They still need a poultice to heal, but you can ignore a couple of them. Someday I'll have some armor to try killing them. :)

Which is often less than the width of the tunnel.

I don't find trying to sneak past them to be effective at all. I think they tweaked bat aggro up a bit.
