How should it work, then?

A simple alphabetical search function for the odd item you know the name of but can't remember where it fits.

Item hot linking: If I'm making a CTC and click on hard leather, it should activate the hard leather recipe for me. Great because it combines finding the recipe for the item you want and its subcomponents into a single action.

If I click/mouseover on a generic component, it should load an automatically populated tooltip that lists what items fit. A little '?' icon in the corner of the image would also work to help intuitively indicate to beginners that a useful popup like that can be found (mousing/clicking on the ? would bring up the menu in that case I suppose?). Ideally if this were set up properly, it'd be a one time effort and not require much further effort from you as you add more items to the game. Your ingame mumbo jumbo (to quote todays update) would be able to do it all automatically there on out.

Reworked hotkeys, maybe letting users define them instead? I'm a little iffy on what would work best, I just know right now the system needs work. They are very inconvenient to use, often requiring traversing the entire keyboard for a single option. A>N>L for example required for lay stone. They are only really worth investing the effort to memorize if you use them very frequently, which means most never get bothered with. I'm not sure I have an amazing suggestion to fix this, as my only idea is punctured due to continuous new items being added.

Detach both crafting and building completely from the menu grid. Clicking the button would open a new widget with bigger icons, detailed selection tabs and names immediately visible.
In addition and for starters, a search function like this is perfect.

This is something I've been thinking on, but something I can't quite put a finger on. Maybe just some visibility would work, or changing the Starcraft style menu so there isn't that 9 button limit without having to use pages. I do like that things are categorized, but on occasion when I can't remember the specific category, a search feature is helpful. I just get annoyed when I need them because I have to move my hand off my mouse to type. (I have a compulsion to memorize keystroke combinations.) Plus, I've not made the conversion to a single-hand keyboard layout. :geek:

Another option would be to set hotkeys to the menu spaces so I could use a numpad or a gaming control with that style input, but that needs key mapping implemented. (Still might need visibility.)

I haven't clicked on the menu buttons once since this is in our client.

Yeah same.

I don't dispute that that is cool, but is it really as cool when you are new and don't know what you're looking for?
