Brodgar Wept
So it began white and new,
Milk fresh from the Ewe.
It's journey nimble,
To its tub.
Rennet added with care,
Deep in some lair.
Slowly it formed,
Curds here and there.
With hand stretched wide,
Into trays did it now reside.
It's home now a cellar,
Rennet sweat dripped.
The life of a cheese,
Is no life of ease.
In its time a cheddar it formed,
A wheel sharp and fine.
Moving up it did see,
A cabin oh so free.
Now fixed on it's perch,
It got familiar with its villagers work.
Bidding it's time it grew,
Crusting and blue.
Now rich and refined.
Brodgar whined.
Look at me,
All come see.
Rushing in villagers came,
To see Brodgar's claim.
Brodgar sat proud,
Boasting loud.
Am I not the finest,
Rich and proud?
Brodgar was a sight indeed,
But his call caught the ears of a wandering steed.
Highwaymen hungry,
Rushed to the Great Hall.
Brodgar gazed at his villagers rush to and fro,
As they lived in a place open to the elements flow.
Steadily they fell,
To the blade.
Brodgar watched from his tray,
Seeing his villagers pray.
Battle raged,
And hearts dismayed.
The reaper came to call,
Sadly did they fall.
The hunters strode forth,
Blood dripped from their blades.
Brodgar gasped in fear,
Knowing his end near.
Ripped from his tray,
A throne no more.
To a hungry hunters mouth he crept,
And Brodgar wept.
