Welcome to Haven. I recommend following Sevenless's Beginner's guide... it's pretty awesome.

1. It's more Perma-Death than Salem.
2. It does have a few quests to get you started.
3. It's run by a WAY better team.

1. Last time I played salem you didn't inherit anything when you die. Ergo haven is less permadeath than salem. Except that animals can permakill you in haven whereas they only knock you out in salem.

Salem actually has a inheritance system now in which you pay an NPC to take a snapshot of your current stats. When you die, your receive some percent of the snapshot. (or waste your money on a item in the cash shop that contunially keeps track of your skills) I'd say Haven is more permadeath than Salem.
