You should mainly avoid rivers, try to get
settled in land at a point where the map
doesn't load in a river. Raiders typically
sail along rivers and look for any signs
of activity. If they don't see you, they
can't kill you.

I'd take a temperamental guy with a sling than a train of vandal alts so I think it is still looking fairly peachy for you.
