One answer is that that's because crime is unbalanced and there's practically no difference between stealing, koeing, and killing. There is also no incentive to keep people alive, but killing them is rewarding, even if minimally.

Another is that many of those people bot and have lots of alts, so their approach to the game is different than a hermit's. For them it's like an arena or a RTS. One char means nothing to them.

In world 8 I had just got my wall up and two newer spawns walk up and asked to join me. I let build close to me and we merged and we lived together until they stooped playing.

playing this game feels like playing counter strike with AWP 1shotting everyone (bows 2 op)
There was a wise soviet conscript that was surrounded by the enemy on the battle of Stalingrad. A mortar shot teared his pants apart causing a big hole in his pants right on his right butt cheek. He felt a glorious cold ass breeze of wind on his butt cheek, like it would be sent by stalin himself, he said - hide your butts

People are untrusting because the stakes are so high. I could lose everything I have worked so long to build just by trusting the wrong person. Even if it's unlikely!

If I had a 1% chance to die by doing something in real life, would I do it? No, because the stakes are so high that I would not even take such a minor chance.

Why do i kill people? Well... sit right
there son and let me tell you about
the way the world works.

You see, back in my day I didn't really
kill people. I would knock them down
and take their pants as a playful little
reminder that they should not commit
the crimes that lead me to them. Now,
I would do this many times until people
actually started behaving in little areas
of the game. People were relatively
nice, and they typically felt thankful
that I didn't kill them. I liked that feeling.

However, because I did not kill them, it
allowed some to grow in aims of killing
me so that they could continue to wipe
out noobs, steal from wicker baskets etc.
I was killed several times. Each time I was
able to pick myself up again and go at it
without a second thought. Though people
began to grow weary of me. My presence
made them paranoid, and mentioning my
name to strangers instantly turned friendly
conversation into a stiff, distant attempt
to get me to go away.

The great thing about killing is it teaches
people in a way that doesn't allow them to
make that same mistake again. It takes
away their ability to do the wrong thing.
It forces them to no longer have any form
of capability to do wrong. They may no
longer have the ability to do right... but
that is merely a sacrifice they must accept.
Now, what's better than giving criminals no
ability to do wrong? What if I make it so
that no one at all can ever do wrong again.
What if i target them one by one until there
is no dark stain upon the hearthlands that
will glare me in the eye as a disgusting
imperfection? Yes, that does sound like a
truly beautiful hearthland, does it not? A
place where there is no more fear of the
other players, no more worry that someone
may steal from you. No more worry that
you will lose everything for no reason.
Because everyone is dead. Utopia through
genocide. Until there is not a single filthy
little hearthling left that may dim the light
of the world.

People may think it sick, but is it so wrong
for me to wish perfection on the hearthlands?
I kill for people like you, my friend, that you
may one day know a flawless Hearthland.
