I like that one where the young boy fights a bunch of battles using a magical item and the power of friendship.

Definitely, what you heard is because of the anime team made it really fast-paced and intense thus it caught up with the manga real quick. But it made it very enjoyable to watch. In the end they left many unanswered questions. But it makes you think of them, make up theories and overall it is a quality anime in my opinion.

Interesting topic. Here are my answers:
- SAO II
- log horizon
- death note
- Full metal alchemist brotherhood (by far the best anime out there in my opinion)
- berserk (the older one, not the weird movies)(my personal favorite anime)
- akame ga kill
- soul eater
- I HATE that stupid rubber pirate kid show. One piece. Never watch it
That's it for me. I'm also watching dead man wonderland but I'm not liking the characters so far so I can't recommend it.

Aa! Megami-sama! (Ah! My Goddess! - 2005-7) is probably my favourite. A romantic dramedy full of heart and wholesomeness. Magic, quasi-religious persons (goddesses) and themes abound - perfect for freaking out the hyper-literalistic fundamentalist in your life!

In case you want to try some vintage anime, I can tell you I also love Galaxy Express 999 - the series (1978-1981). 100+ episodes of a boy and a female android travelling across the cosmos on a space train that looks like it came from the 1890s. :D

Adventure Time?
"...the dungeon and shackles are already at my threshold to show me here and now my eternal disgrace. Only you can work the miracle to make life possible for a soul so imperiled by doubt, O Atoner for all, exalted beyond saying." - St. Gregory of Narek, Book of Lamentations, Prayer 1.

You are much loved! Love in return!

The show has nothing to offer besides mindless mild entertainment and a few hollow life lessons here and there. It has no good depth to any of its characters or plots . The overall quality of every aspect of the show is really really bad because the creators choose quantity over quality. The main character is annoying. The main character also never changes or develops for all 800 episodes. There's no overarching plot line besides, "go find the magic special treasure; oh and also there's mean people who are also trying to get the treasure".
I'd expect a 6 year old to like this show, but nobody older than 11. Not sure why it has such a big fan base.
I think the original post wants content that's a little more... Intelligent.
Spooky.
