I'd also suggest building a bee skep in the middle of your crops for faster crop growth. It'll help immensely in the long run (plus they provide wax, which is essential for making hard leather and will greatly expand your building/crafting options.)

Here's my latest stonestead. I used blackthorn blocks and aspen boards with a granite base. Turned out really swell.
