There's something cosmically poetic about that.

Yes, that is correct. If a celestial body with as much or more gravitational force came within contact distance of the Earth, the Earth and all of us would be stripped down and turned into another ring for that celestial body. There are concerns about this scenario happening (even if it is unlikely) when the Milky Way and Andromeda intersect in about 4 billion years.

Mortal man will concern himself with 4 billion year event? I do not sure about this one's wisdom.

Saturn is a gas giant though no? We might die because of the tides and friction but wouldn't the planet "go right through it" so to speak since it isn't solid?

I really don't want to be more rude than I have to, but are you really one to speak if you actually bought into the picture in your OP?

For the record, the base picture is part of a series illustrating what it would look like if other planets were as close as the Moon is. I really, really hope I don't have to mention that there's no way this side of literally Armageddon that Saturn will be as close to Earth as the Moon is.

No, but I knew I had seen another one from the series, and then it was just a Image Google search away.

We'd pass through the surface layer of Saturn and move closer to the core where the pressure would crush, bake, and rip apart Earth. The core of Saturn is hotter than the surface of the sun. Just in case you thought life might find a way to survive extreme heat and pressure (we do have extremophiles on Earth after all) you must bear in mind that the heat that planet cores produce isn't merely a product of pressure. They're also immensely radioactive.
