It doesn't happen often, but we've had viable third party candidates. Lincoln and the new Republican ticket, Teddy Roosevelt and the Bull Moose Party and Ross Perot on an Independent platform.
I'm not sure if a third party would really change US politics to any great extent since it would only be an extension of the right/left political spectrum. We've got sectionalist coalitions built into our two party system - while Europeans send minor parties to parliaments which then join sectional voting blocks. And because of that, there's not a lot of difference when it comes down to voter representation IE: we all settle/compromise in ways we find distasteful.
