Oklahoma, Colorado, New York, Hawaii, Florida

Lawton Oklahoma + Elgin Oklahoma, Watertown New York + New York City, Honolulu Hawaii, Miami Florida + Crestview Florida and Colorado Springs + Denver colorado

Very strange to me. I have lived in some Indiana, New Jersey, and Connecticut and I have hear the men say these. New York is close state to these. Maybe Watertown is too northern to get this insect?

I do not trust states shaped as meat cleaver to make this decisions.

My family is from the South (Texas and Tennassee and later Oklahoma), and I grew up in Midwest US, and I've heard both firefly and lightning bug, but the latter more prominently. I've always preferred firefly because it was easier to say.

That's a светлячок. I guess "lightie" or "lighty" or "light bug" are the most accurate translations.

Having lived in California, Arizona, Oregon, Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, New York and Maryland, I have heard all 3 titles for this common insect, Yet I mainly refer to them by what I was taught growing up in Northern California, and that is by Firefly.

Finnish word for Lampyridae is "kiiltomato" which translates into "gleaming worm." Like "firefly" this designation suffers from the fact that Lampyridae are in fact beetles.

I can't believe they cancelled firefly's namesake, Firefly:

It was a pretty good show.
