or im just bad at the game thats a thing too :?

it happens, there's no way to tell if the initial cave wall will cause a cave-in so the only two options are risk it or build a support

You do know Miner's Helmet is still a thing? Equipping one (and maybe bringing one or two spares along) is a no-brainer when you go poking cave walls on lvl5.

Well, did you ever have to survey manually (i.e. by poking a tile every ~40 tiles, looking for quality increase) 10x10 grids worth of caverns? I tell you, that's when Miner's Helmet comes in very, very handy. Some metal and leather and you have One "Get Out Of Cave-In Free" card =)

I think i had like 40 tiles of single lvl1 wall tiles digged to get a feeling for node sizes. I never go a cave in that way. Either I've been very luck, or you've had some really bad luck.

@Hasta + Kaios: Doesn't help if you don't have metal yet.

I'm starting to suspect you're just, achem, stats-challenged (low on STR and have to wear STR-gilded gear to mine) >.<

Seriously though, I'm just saying that a helmet is an option, and situationally a reasonable one. Perferred options may vary.

@Groq - it's way past mid-world and I'm still finding ore boulders just laying there in the open.

why would that matter though I'd still build supports either way and I always check to see if I can mine a spot (not actually mine the tile but just see if i can) before I build a support anyways

never said using a helmet wasn't a good option it is I just don't bother

You could try to prospect over your cave to get an idea where in your cave ore is. You might have missed a node since its a bit away from the cave walls.
