It's pretty on topic. I was literally talking about the game; however, it is now derailing because you're talking about derailing the thread.

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

That giant dark red structure is a vehicle that makes up for the structure of my base.

Top left corner:
The crafting room where i have every single item within crafting range organized into categories. It also have virtually every crafting station and tool within crafting range as well. The center flood light surrounded by barrels has a bicycle pedals linked to alternators so I can craft and exercise to give power to my base if my 25 solar panels aren't recharging fast enough. It also the the control panel area so I can monitor my surrounding with the 8 cameras as well as the 8 avalanche turrets.

Top right corner. Where I store my rare items, artifacts, entertainment items, books, and survival gear. At the top right corner of that is my sleeping room. Bottom left are my 25 upgraded solar panels, each with a car, motorbike, and truck battery, along with a swappable battery and battery case. Finally it has a pair of 55 gal, one for clean water, and the other for dirty water.

Bottom. This is the farm area where I grow things. It also have a pair of fermenting vat and a quern. Finally the farm area is near the vicinity of a fridge so I can prolong the life of my harvest.

Top of my base. My garage where I go mad scientist with even more designs for vehicles. It is also where I dismantle any civilian and military vehicle I find and a place where I perform maintenance on the ones I have. It also houses my scavenger vehicles, one is a modified flatbed truck-turned survival armored van, and the other is literally a 3x3 square cargo space with wheels that I can pull when it is empty, or drive when it is not (it is too heavy to pull when full).

Tbh I just put all my spare parts into a huge pile, all my tools into another separate pile, and see what I can craft. Never organised into categories or workshops etc.
Here is another character of mine:

I organize my things because some of the items that I craft are both usable and are components as well, notably rags, plastic liquid containers, and chemicals. Plus I can keep track of what I am deficient in, inventory-wise.

I can just tell when I'm out of things as soon as I'm not able to craft something because I don't have enough of it tbh. Usually, no matter how long I play, my bases are just 1 room with 4-5 piles of tools, components, food etc.

Some of us grew up with this shit. As the line went from The Matrix "I don't even see the code." The first games I programmed into a computer (because getting an issue of Byte or a book of games was cheaper than buying games at wherever) were all text based. I learned to program in BASIC on this stuff.

RLs aren't for everyone. Some are purists and want only ASCII character/tilesets. Others rather deal with graphics. I don't judge either way, but will agree that the only way to play C:DDA is with ASCII as the tileset is even more restrictive than the above complaint about lack of distinguishing mobs by characters.

To answer Jesus's question above, the guy that followed up was one of the reasons, my post is another. They've been pushing the tileset mode over ASCII. I think in one build, you had no option but to play with the tileset, which is the last time I recall playing it.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

afaik there has never been a version where it was impossible not to turn off tiles. Atm there are two separate downloads - a tiles one and a normal one. The tiles version also includes some other features, like a minimap, but you can turn off tiles even in that client if you want the extra features. Personally, I either use one of the minimalist tilesets (like the one in the picture above) or ASCII in the tiles client because I like the minimap.
