Newer computers don't seem to have the speed issues that my old P4 had. Part of it is memory bus speeds being 4-6x faster. (A few more bus generations and there'll be no difference between processor and motherboard bus speeds. Silicon can only go so fast before quantum mechanics says "slow down.") I find myself limiting frame rates so I can keep up with what's going on.

And yeah, Dwarf Therapist is a must have... at least until Tarn codes in better dwarf management tools.

In latest versions performance has been improved a lot, they switched to 64x which probably does not have that much impact. But they also started using new compiler which seems to have improved performance for quite a bit. There are no mods available for those newest versions though, as lot of things that mods used have changed.

Ya, I know also lot of performance tricks (atom smashers, proper pathfinding.. etc) but still after couple hours with +100 dorfs my FPS are ~20. You can't play like this. I will buy new PC, then maybe I will back to DF.

Aftermatch of the great battle. 14 goblins, various ranged combat units attempted to siege my place.
First I locked the doors, but then they started killing my cattle so I had to send my glorious axedwarves on them.
Zero casualties for me, if one reindeer is not counted in. All goblins dead. Some of them still lurking in edges of the map but I doubt they dare to re-visit.

I prefer elves too.
Free trade goods every time they visit, and some real training for my axedwarves.

I was about about 5-10 on my P4 at this point. Before I learned to atom smash and make proper paths, it'd be at under 5. God forbid a siege would occur.... :(

20 is playable. 10 is playable, but slow. Faster than 30 is just too much of a rush or constant pausing to do things.

I have never had major issues with fps as my fortresses usually dont last too long. But on this fortress I have been experiencing big fps drops sometimes.
Im currently slaughtering bunch of animals to see if that would help a bit.

Also my custom design for 92 bedrooms. Very fancy.

For some reason dwarves dont party at all in fort.
I have dining/meeting hall with bunch of chairs and tables. But they do nothing.

Could it be the pathing algorithm that's eating cycles? Looks awesome, but...

I made a cool timelapse video of construction of that bedroom.
