That's the thing, the Moot isn't for containment. Containment is what Hel exists for. The Moot is for in game politics. That's Alliances, raids, wars, tracking and Rangers. Currently, someone posts a legitimate thread, a raid, an announcement, whatever, and most of the time it takes a hard left and turns into pointless bickering.

The top two posts in Moot right now are great examples of what should and shouldn't be there.
Should: "Dis Skulls for Dis Throne" - viewtopic.php?f=54&t=52126
Faction banter, calls to action, promise of riches, no personal bickering. This is quality Moot content.
Shouldn't: "To whoever destroyed our Minehole" - viewtopic.php?f=54&t=52138
The thread, as it began, is fine in the Moot, but with he very first reply was driven off-topic and turned into personal bickering. It should have died with the original post, but has gone on for 4 pages and counting.
I think it's made of bubbles and hate.

I think a large component of the problem is who is to become the arbiter of what is and is not legitimate political discourse? It's a slippery slope if you start applying varying levels of censorship from multiple moderators in something as subjective as that.

I'm actually not too worried about that. The moderators have all been around for a long time, and have seen the best and worst the forum has ever offered. Jorb and loftar seem to keep tabs on the moderators and the only people I've ever seen complain about them are people who are getting moderated.

Typically, it's one or more people pretending to be stupid in order to solicit a response from another person or group. Typically, the responses is on par with a half-assed "you're retarded" to which the other entity believes they have roused anger or frustration in the other party. And generally the quality of dialogue is lowered until it reaches a bubbling pit of refuse and filth to which any sane outside party would find repulsive.

To be honest, after having been told to kill myself yesterday from members of this community I'd otherwise ordinarily respect killed any benefit of the doubt that someone's approaching discussion with the intention of being civil.

Kill yourself. Do the world a favor. Although, one less infection won't change anything.

The community culture has gone, I think, out of control away from what the dev's and moderators desire (And i believe they share similar opinions, but don't quote me on it). At this point however, moderation can only do so much. There needs to be a significant and more importantly active push back against this behavior without participating in it. Currently it's tolerated where it really shouldn't be. Now when I say active, I mean involving personal effort to make change. Often the best way to discourage this sort of thing is to ignore the fact that it ever happens. this may seem a passive response, but it is a deliberate choice of action. Don't be bothered by it, don't quote or comment on it, don't feed the fire.

I am quoting you on it as I think the same thing. ;)

I think jorbtar want to see their game grow. There's a balance between fostering a good community and good competition. I know that they are (long time? former?) channers, but maybe not the /b/tard crowd (can't really be sure about that, but have my suspicions). I think this is why Granger was put in place as a mod as he went to jorb with thoughts of what needed to be done to try and improve things and maybe get some of the new players to stick around, at least when it comes to fostering community. Forum moderation can't do much if the new folks leave because they were trolled in the game or don't like the grind or hardcore features of the game.

There is a difference between a troll and flame wars. A troll is usually the one trying to stir the pot (I'm eying a certain poster or two in this thread), and the rest become guilty of a flame war. What we see a lot of in The Moot are flame wars. Some are semi-respectful of the other players and keep the jeers game related and politic. Others quickly devolve into personal insults and worse. It's the personal we really try to keep cleaned up.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
