As long as you're an outlaw you can never charter travel so if you murdered someone that's a week or however long that lasts exactly. It's just an hour of being unable to hearth though after committing any crime (other than trespass).

Outlaw also means your character remains logged in, at least while the area is loaded, so if you have scents out the character will always be logged in when someone is around even if the person may still be offline.

Also, there are no murder scents near the body. So, if someone killed my friend outside the village and stole a key (not even sure if my friend had a master key with him), why the killer would bring his dead body?

They wouldn't, not any reasonable thinking person I know. Most people do their crime, boat around for the one hour and hearth home.

You could always hide the body somewhere I suppose in case the guy isn't your friend, at least if your friend does get back in contact with you and it turns out he is not that guy you'll at least have his body for him.

In case your buddy has a pclaim inside your walls that you have rights to: move the body there (so a descendant can access it) and put a runestone next to the guy on the fire with your contact info - once contacted ask him something only he knows to validate it's really him, destroy the stone afterwards.
