Smelting more than 13 batches per 3.5 days (assuming it's still 3.5 days at full load) is 'mass production' now? (In the case of Heavy Earth that's less than 20 bars, I think that's with all bonus skills.)

Given all that's changed is the burn time of the kilns themselves and not the quantity of coal produced, yeah. Maybe you should plan your industry in advance instead of claiming there's a "coal shortage". You just didn't think.

It just feels wrong that a single person needs to build SEVERAL giant kilns for normal metal production. Surely this can't be intended, can it?

Fixed that for you. Given they nerfed kilns on the same patch the world started, yeah I'm pretty sure it's intended.

EDIT: And to be honest I'm skeptical you're both mining the ore, cutting the wood, and constructing the base with a single character. Sorta makes your entire point moot doesn't it?

For one person, that sounds like a reasonable production rate. That's more than you need for a set of tools, in a fairly short time.

Shortage is defined as there being more demand than supple in an area. The reason for a lack of supply is irrelevant. There are probably local shortages all over the hearthlands, my area included. If he's looking to buy coal, and there is no coal to buy, then there is a shortage.
I think it's made of bubbles and hate.

I don't have enough leather. Why is there a leather shortage? Why do I need 10+ drying racks and tubs if I'm a hermit for normal leather production? That's absurd for a single individual. Is this intended? /s

Yeah. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

If he's looking to buy coal he's put this thread in the wrong sub-forum.

Coal was bountiful in w9 because w8 had the Church of the Tar Kiln in it.
In our arrogance we became accustomed to that easy life, ignoring the gods and believing such plenty to be the norm.
Because of this no temples were built in w9, and now, in w10, we're paying the price. It's your own fault, you should have prayed more.

You're still sidestepping the argument at hand. Production time for coal is quadrupled. It now takes more than 8 kilns running constantly, using to supply one smelter running constantly or two smelters running for half the day. That's a recipe for a shortage, regardless of whether he's producing alone or in a village.

Lets compare that to your slippery slope. You need 1 drying rack to supply two tanning tubs. Do you see the difference in scale here? Why not extend your argument to producing cone cows? There's obviously a shortage of branches.

Amen.

I have done all of this on a single character. This entire world I've only made a single alt so far, and all she did was aggro some bats and get KOed by them so my main could get to my base (I live in a cave; this happened on day 1 when I didn't have claims on both the base and the entrance and a road connecting them).
