my first encounter with another player
After building my home I had logged out for the day and would continue the adventure the next morning when there would be more time to play. It is important to note that I was 10 hours into the gameplay at the time. It seems that world 8 came with a allotted amount of play hours... not that I had any idea of course.
I logged back into the game feeling excited about all that I had accomplished on my first day. I decided that my new goal since I finally had a home would be to fetch some clothes for my poor naked little man. I had to be civilized after all, I was a home owner now. I ventured forth from my home off in a direction that I had not travelled before. After a few minutes of walking and avoiding various animals, I found myself at the waters edge and decided to follow the coast of what I assumed to be a fairly large sized lake or an ocean.
I nearly immediately came upon a boat sitting at the shore near another home that had nobody beside it. "This game is like a ghost town" I began to think. I walked around his property and looked at his various items. I was trying to build myself a mental list of what I myself might need and before I knew it ran straight into an invisible wall. The game had informed me that the land I was attempting to walk on was actually claimed by this other player and that I could not step on it or touch his various items. That seemed like a smart thing to do in order to keep yourself safe, but seemed unnecessary to me at the time. I wandered around the boxy edge of his claimed land and found that there was 1 item that I could interact with. The person left his boat in the water and was not claimed.
I clicked on the boat and before I knew it I was sitting inside of the boat at the oars. "That is a pretty neat feature" I was thinking at the time. I clicked the shore to exit the boat since it was not mine and I never really intended to board it in the first place. I clicked the coast line and I saw that the boat sat at the shore. I right clicked the land and was still unable to exit the boat. I began to worry a little at this point since every single action could be controlled with a right click or left click up until this point. "I think that I am stuck" I said aloud.
I decided that I may as well make the best of the situation and take the boat out for a spin. "Maybe there is a dock out there that I could park this boat at and get out" I thought to myself. I zoomed around at incredible speeds in this boat and ventured out far and wide seeing many animals trees and even people homes. I saw only two types of homes being built by people and began to wonder if there was any other type that could be made. I quickly lost interest in the subject as I was panicked that there may be no real way out of this boat. "Maybe the boat was cursed and that why it was unguarded" I pondered. I began to convince myself that there was no way out of this small rowboat.
Desperate for help at this point and still not having seen another human player in this game I began trying to google the way to get out of this boat. I searched for various terms such as "cursed boat haven and hearth", "trapped by boat haven and hearth", "haven and hearth rowboat of doom". eventually one of the links led me to the forums for the game. It took me a few hours but eventually I found a post by another user who explained that you need to hold the ctrl key to exit the boat. "hold the ctrl key... to exit the boat?" "That doesn't sound right, but I don't nothing I have done has worked so far" I thought to myself.
I gave it a shot and found myself walking back on land again! "Sweet land, how I missed you!!" I said aloud. "I wonder if ctrl is used any other ways in this game", "why was there no explanation anywhere of the mapped keys or controls?", "I bet the developers of this game are massive trolls to come up with these issues I have ben running into" I began to think the various thoughts. I remembered about my hearth fire teleport button and quickly pressed it to find my way back home since I had been gone for a few hours and was completely lost far away from home.
I arrived at my original location in the woods and began walking back up to the lake near my home. "I wish there was a way to move this green fire" I said as I walked back. Nearly half way back I had finally seen my first glimpse of another player. There was a man walking around in a green wizard hat with green clothes holding a table over his head. I had so many question for this person that I could hardly contain myself, but did manage to just type out "hello fellow gamer!". The other player typed back "hi" and before I could type another word vanished table and all. I was crushed that I was not able to get any answers but also very relieved to see that other people also played this game!
I went back home and notice that those dust bunny/insects were no longer at my work area I had previously built. I was so excited that I might be able to steal back my items and stash them in my new home. I got within sight of the work area and saw that several of my baskets were missing and the fence was broken. "Those dust bunnies are savages, They destroyed my items!" I thought to myself. I grabbed one of the remaining baskets and walked into my home.. only there was something off about my home. It seems that my table and all the food on it were missing." THAT OTHER PLAYER WAS CARRYING MY TABLE!" I yelled just moments after realizing it.
I was so upset that I had lost all of my progress once again and had to build more items that I had already built before! "I need to figure out how that player locked down his area and do that to my area" I was certain that there was a lore or stat that would enable me to do that as well.. but I hadn't gotten any points for finding new discoveries in a while. I will have to set off and look for new trees and bushes to forage so that I can keep earning new skills and stats! I left my home in the hopes of discovering a new resource.
