As for why I jokingly said exotic pets, it's because of the animals and animal trinkets running around.

I think these are all entrances to an instanced area that you get a one time chance on fighting some boss or big creature in and if you fail they close. (the devs talked about somethhing like this a whhile ago in their stream) it would be harder to exploit or bot it if its instanced like this.
