I know it's a security no-no, but I have always made an inward facing gate so that way I can get inside in a hurry if I can't hearth home. Just make sure you don't lose the key. If you lose the key, change the lock immediately. If you get in a chase and can't get home, dump the key in the water so you don't die with it on you; this goes whether by beast or player. Immediately make a new lock after getting back home, whether that be inheriting or just hearthing home after being KO'd.
