I'm probably not the best one to answer since I'm pretty casual for the last couple of years, but the idea is to keep hunger up (the 2x-3x bonus areas) while keeping energy up for the most efficient FEP gains. Experienced players do this with a lot of data manipulation. Newer players* should do this as best they can with food variety and high energy/FEP, low hunger foods until they can play the "spreadsheet" game. *(or everyone in new worlds)
Some of the keys to chase are a good table and chair, Symbel items on the table, and quality food. Finally, a feasting bonus from using bonfires. Everything done right, you can eat night and day and barely fill your stomach.
Honestly, I tend to just eat what I have. I do try to focus on the hunger/FEP/energy ratios, but I don't put an absolute priority on it over stat gains. It's not as efficient, but it works for me. The biggest issue I have, since I'm trying to keep it casual, is some of the efficiencies other players utilize, such as drinks, for managing satiations. I don't use a lot of labor alts (work that expends a lot of energy, has little reward for what is done, such as digging dirt) or alts at all right now, and don't want to commit the time to doing a lot of trading or managing livestock, so it works for me.
