I think that is what wurm basically does, yes.
When you gain skills, the grind gets a bit easier. Of course there will still be a lot of it, but you might be able to succesfully craft a board after only 3 attempts, instead of 20!
Also! In wurm, to own a "claim" that protects land from other players, you have to pay upkeep of your claim by coins. You can in theory trade with other players to earn these coins, but this is not possible, except if you are very highly skilled in some trade.
The coins can also be bought with real money, and this is what most people do to pay their claims upkeep.
Thus you also dont get some troll claims, because no one wants to pay for their upkeep.
Also characters have quite low skill cap if you dont have subscription. So there are not that many alts. Of course there are some, but not as many as in HnH for example.
And when players have to pay to have alts, alts really are not a problem, but a good thing, as it means more income.
Griefing others is much more difficult too. In HnH, you can build a palisade around some noobs place in few hours.
In wurm, even with a highly skilled character, building a small wall around some small place would be a huge project, and take weeks.
