I'd rather return to the topic of the thread (ahem) and metaphorically slap you in the face by enquiring about your contributions to your field of study in light of how godawful and broken your beloved DSM is?

I'm well on my way to taking you down in this emerging content off bitch.

If you want to stick to the thread topic then don't make bullshit claims about your earnings to humble-brag about how much money you made sucking dick in your van bro

Do you want to venture down that philosophical rabbit hole? Let's start by examining your education and guaging to what extent you've been brainwashed by society and your education. It's hard to think outside the box.

I wouldn't want to live your life either ;)

I would personally much rather live the life of somebody who is educated than that of somebody who has no job and lives in a car. I mean, you can call it brainwashed all you want but I think there are smarter ways to subvert societal norms or capitalism. Look at anarchist communities, communes, earthships, offgrid living (or as offgrid as a particular country may allow). When you are an educated person you can accomplish great things and live very comfortably like this, especially if you have a bit of money to start yourself off.

What's wrong with going to an institution to learn everything you can about something you love and getting a degree anyways?

This entire thread just reads as somebody trying to justify their poor life choices.

Colsie jealous he got suckered into what he thought would be a cash cow of a job but turned out it wasn't. You jelly I got more money than you bro? Your poor ego. How are you gonna keep your missus... You also failed to answer my question. Please regurgitate some more of that bullshit about how individual minds work you clown.

How's that edumacation working out for you lmao.

I'm actually working atm for a few weeks or... However long I can be assed. I'm not making huge money anymore. It's a moral choice. Ask me about the NBN sometime in like... Something that isn't a public forum. I also stated quite clearly in the OP that education has a place. You can't even see that it could use some improvement. Point and case.

Wasn't expecting such vehment personal attacks, seems I hit a nerve. A lot of people seem to feel privileged and entitled because they can repeat what somebody else wrote down one time...

I do think that a lot of report writing is unnecessary, but the rest of my uni experience has been great, though that may be because of my field of study. The main purpose of report writing should be learning how to make a statement, then justify that statement in a clear and concise way. Most of what I learn is just pure knowledge, physics and materials and things like that.

You didn't even really ask me a question lol

I don't diagnose people using the DSM, that's not what I went to school for and I have no interest in playing doctor. But if you're going to call it broken, you could at least explain how you think that's the case (without regurgitating something you've heard someone else say, of course)

My contributions to the field would be the work that I've done with autistic children/teens, and their families. What do you expect? I'm not in a field where you have a eureka moment or invention that cures everyone and the work stops

Thanks Adder1234 and Granger too for the meaningful posts.

See I have, as stated, never experienced University. I do question the time requirement and the way Universities operate to make a profit. I am very interested in personal experiences had by thise who have been to Uni wherever in the world it may have been.

Once you finish your Batchelors degree does further study demand more original thought?

If you go on to do a masters and then a PhD, yes.
It's very hard if not impossible to get a doctorate in something without presenting something new to further the field in some way

I agree that you don't necessarily need formal education to learn things. You can learn almost any things in your home, maybe even more easily than in school, as you can decide the pace and methods yourself.
Forlearning some things, school helps, of course. But for most, it does not.

Schools are needed for 1 reason, and 1 reason only.
People lack self-discipline! Most people don't have enough self-dispicline to study about things themselves.
Of course they also give you situations to socialize and make networks. But for studying most of the things, they would not be needed.

Of course, in Finland, all education is essentially "free", and probably differs from other countries in many other aspects too. So my point of view may be a bit different from the others.

I think in other countries you have to pay just to go to the university. In Finland, you only have to buy books and public transport ticket. (Though most of the books can be acquired for free) Education is valued in Finland, but you dont need university degree to get a job, though of course, this depends a bit on the field that you are in.
There has been a lot of discussion lately about the cost of high school in Finland, currently you have to buy books, a laptop and pay some money to take the "final exam". This comes with quite a cost (couple of thousand euros combined for all of the 3 years). But I dont think that anyone skips high school or university only because their families could not afford it, as state gives some financial aid for the poor ones. (Though these days they give less money for free, but still offer a relatively cheap loan, backed by the government, if you graduate fast enough, you have to pay less money back to the bank than what it gave to you)

Regardless of how smart you might think you are, a high school diploma is the bare minimum requirement for employment in North America. Even if you're some brain child that is somehow above their instructors at a young age, you still need that piece of paper or shit is not going to be enjoyable for you.

Maybe on some careers. But I do know a guy who did not go to high school, but studied by himself at home, and is now working for some hedge fund company in Swizerland, making a fortune. So success without any formal education is definitely not impossible.
