Hah. M&B combat is too ping dependent for an international MMO.

Life is Feudal and Gloria Victis are two MMOs with m&b style combat, and each have like 5+ servers for ping reasons, to their detriment.

I'm giving a try at Wakfu, the combat system looks pretty fun.

We actually did originally plan for turned-based combat when we started implementing the first combat system back in Legacy. We discarded the idea, however, when we realized it would interact too weirdly with other players who aren't locked in combat and either can walk freely around the players who are, or are themselves restricted from their general area.

I'd like it.
Just put everyone who renders combat into the fight, with their turn starting the next round.

I mean, the main problem is that it's so easily abused by putting two alts in combat next to someone just to lock him into the game and/or prevent him from getting anything useful done.

That's fair, but any abuses could be minimized.
Perhaps require LOS to lock into combat (to ensure you could at least knock them out), and place a 10 second cap on decision making in rounds, with a 30 second time bank for extra time not taken.

There could be a non-aggressive move to disable/log out other characters with some long multi-turn charge up to make to not viable in actual combat.

There is a system of combat that turns the area into a turn-based fighting area.

basiclly the world is tiled (much like HnH)
if someone engages pvp. it drops a flag.
Normally it's the defender who wants to drop the flag before the attack gets to close in free movement.

the flag then turns a 40x40 zone of squares into a tiled combat zone with anything caught inside also in combat. if anyone makes it to the edge they escape.
if anyone wanted to join they cross into the zone and are que for next turn.

in order to prevent from exploiting the system. they added 3 options when escaping the zone.
>logout
>exit directly
>exit randomly (placing you randomly about the zone

in the end people still exploited it by using alts to follow their main
they end up having an army of 9 alts attacking 1 random dude for resources.
not to mention snipers were OP in that game
so you have 9 guys engage with quick shot and snipe you to death instantly....
WARNING! MY ENGISH SUCKS.

Wow ... then it's actually doable, very nice. A tactical and in depth turn based combat system for haven would be something to think about, if you ask to me.

i wouldnt grid the combat, just make it freeform movement. Still believe the AOE attacks are the way to go. It would slow down combat quite a bit, give a sort of tactical feel to it. I like the idea, tho idk how well it would work in implementation.

Still feel like their is potential abuse that could be had with such a system tho, as intentional fights to block areas, or block egress, or simply walking around to the other side of combat to initiate and the like.

This. It's quite unappetizing.
