Setting up a nice looking base after you're in a sufficiently safe position in the game is where I dump a lot of my time and interest in the game.

Well it makes sense that without the social aspects of the game it might end up feeling very limited.
Being a hermit is nice, but if you don't risk it and engage with other people you will miss out on a lot of features.

In my own particular case, I'm a mix. I started as a humble hermitage, and recruited a couple more hermits to form a nooby village with.
While risky, this satisfies my need for independence while allowing me to engage in cooperative missions and tasks.

Also building silly things like a local graveyard, inn, monument, and bringing people closer is always amusing.

Maybe that’s the problem, it feels like work.

Maybe. More specifically, said work feels less worthwhile perhaps? What I mean is, as others have mentioned, much more can be achieved in a group.

But then of course we see Jorb's last W10 stream recently. He is a solo player and takes time to play the game that far even though he works on it too? His place was in total disarray but he made great progress. So Jorb, if you read this, mind sharing what it is about your game that kept you that interested, despite also developing for it too??

I dont play hermit but if I was a hermit then my goal would be to get to a stage where I can be a soldier or contribute for whichever kingdom I am living under. That seems like a fun goal to me personally. Kingdoms really force wider communal efforts and make game more inclusive for hermits. Of course there is only 1 kingdom at the moment but you can probably guess which kingdoms will end up existing.

Yeah, Kingdoms make hermitting a lot easier; as you get the benefits of both worlds. It will still need some time however for them to establish and spread in a size that most people are positivly affected.

Experienced players will always see ways to improve their situation.
For me getting the basics is not as fun as it used to be anymore.
My fun begins when all the required steps to create an efficient village is done.

I've created an alt out of necessity - to scout for roaming PvPers - and it appeared that I enjoy the early game content, so I started to play on him from time to time: that helps. Also, developing that alt without caring about lp/hr, hunger, wounds etc. is kinda fun )

But for you I'd advice to join some kind of cimmunity. You can start with discord, and then slowly move or invite more people. Dungeons are quite fun, and you'll need a group for that.

Keep expanding your Village.
Plant more Flax. Make more Cloth.
Once the your entire Continent is painted with your Village Claim, only THEN can you say you beat the game.
I'm working on it, the only thing holding me back is the 2 days waiting time between each Village expansion :(

His tentacles will envelop this world.
