this thread is a classic when the world is settling down

op wants the classic mmo experience, but thats kinda rare in a world of esports and pubg

problem nowadays is not enough players for too many games... back in the day any mmo would give you that

These are some spirited responses. Glad to see that people are so passionate about this corner of the internet

I literally complained about this in my OP. The "classic" experience is simply something that doesn't sync up well with me despite giving it a fair shot, so instead I got my multiplayer experiences from elsewhere

Good question; it's not something that can easily be put into words

Lightning2 wrote:Did you manage to create a shack and then you quit

It was a playsession that lasted until 4AM and my biggest achievement was making a pair of clogs. I never managed any clothes much less a shack :(

pls

It begs the question of if you lot care more about interacting with each other rather then the game itself.

MagicManICT wrote:No, Haven isn't for everyone. Yes, there's a lot of problems. Everyone acknowledges it.

Yes, and the artist's purpose in society is to do the impossible

MagicManICT wrote:The downside is you have very few people working on it... too few, even. Ideas never get realized fast enough, bugs don't get fixed fast enough.

Big-budget devs often prove to be no different in this regard.
I assume you haven't heard of the Terse Brothers and their insane development and bugfix speed? New expansion every week~

MagicManICT wrote:It's a labor of love, not profit. If you don't love it, then at least good luck to you in the search for the "great game" you can play for years to come.

All of the games I have mentioned are the "great game" that kept me busy for years. I moved on only because I wanted something new after who knows how many hours spent

I think of the Adams brothers when I think indie game development and what can be accomplished with art. Not everyone has the same vision, and not everyone is working on the same type of project.

TBH, I've played dozens of indie MMOs with dev teams of less than 5 people. The best done one I've played is Perpetuum, but I think they had some outside budget help to get going. The next would be A Tale in the Desert (1-3 for it's entire history that I'm aware). Haven ranks at #3 in my list of accomplished MMOs of <5 devs. I've not dug around a lot the last few years for newer ones, mostly due to lack of budget (most want you to pay up front or subscriptions) or lack of interest in the game world/subject/style. (And if you count MUDs, I've played 100+, but then Haven would probably move down several places, probably under top 10. i'd note several of those had volunteer developers/wizards, though, so not sure you could count them as "less than 5 developer team")

And as far as a starting budget, not everyone starts with a house and retirement fund to dump into startup costs. Some people bootstrap their projects from nothing, some people start right out of college and have little to no prior experience except from school, some are just great at art and design and figure out the programming as they go along. Of these, few are MMOs.

And did you mean Trese Brothers? If so, I don't see any multiplayer games in their catalog, let alone MMOs.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

All I want is a game to poke holes in. Why is this so hard to find

The game advertises itself as a game that tries different things! Great! I would love a game where I can experiment with different approaches and different character builds. I would love a game with player interaction, or a game with fire as a thematic focal point, or a game that is somewhat intuitive to use, or at least a game where I don't have to fight the client to get anything done

Of course the fanbase defends it as per how the autistic internet usually works. I am told that this is meant to be different for "what you're used to" and "i dont know what game you come from". Well first of all I applaud this for being different from what people are used to, which I don't think you clowns appreciate proper. Also I don't know what they mean by "what you're used to". It's true that I don't know what a pre-wow mmo is supposed to look like, because my only experience with pre-wow mmos is bouncing hard off of every private server game I have ever tried. I also don't know what wow looks like, because I despise monoculture and go far out of my way to avoid it.
My reference points for multiplayer games are Freelancer, Neverwinter Nights, the near-defunct Allegiance, and the Freespace 2 modding community. I don't like what the fanbase is implying with "what game you come from".

Meanwhile the players fragment themselves into small, tight-knit discord groups that hide everything while they plot and scheme against each other. It takes a very specific type of individual to let themselves get tied down like this, and if the fanbase wants to whine about pre-wow mmos then they need to recognize that this "very specific type of individual" is not everybody.

and yes i know this dodgy game is a solo dev without a budget. hrm. How do I word this
There are people out there who have sold their house and their 401k so they have money to make the game that they want. Having run into such commitment I consider it perfectly reasonable to weigh small-time projects against big budget devs, and Seatribe is not meeting that standard.

I think i'll go back to dark souls pvp now. It's more pleasant then this

Ok, but why did you not like the game?

tight-knit discord groups? I guess some of them, but I'm a super non-social hermit that basically just lurks on the forums because I'm not super interested in conversation (check my post count, no lies here), and I've gotten 3 discord group links dropped on me just by roaming around. I haven't used them, but I mean the people are out there. I played WoW for thousands of hours to the point of getting sick of it and I never returned after WotLK came out, but I always come back to this game with 1 or 2 of my IRL buds. TBH, if you play this game alone, it's a really cumbersome experience. The exploration is interesting but hunting's a lot harder than I remember it from old haven now, progressing alone would probably be crazy hard. But with at least one other person with you, it's a pretty good experience IMO. It's super chill, but there's enough "butt-pucker" to satisfy that urge for excitement. Perma-death is always kind of frowned upon if you're not used to it. Some love the thrill and harshness of it, a lot don't. As somebody that just lurks around the forums though, I mean, you're gonna find trolls wherever there's internet, I actually think there's more reasonable people in this community than most, although like I said, I don't really talk to anybody, just purely observation.

This is just plain dull to play in a way that can't be put into words easily.

So you just decided to write 4 paragraphs ranting about yourself and MMOs in general instead of Haven or the actual title you posted lmao. The community won't miss a scatterbrained whiner, we prefer focused whiners like shubla
