There is no conclusive evidence that mask would decrease rate of infection.

There is, that's why facemasks exist in general. There are however two important things to note:
1) Facemasks prevent you from infecting others. They do very little to prevent you from getting infected.
2) Mask mandates have been shown to have only a minor effect on preventing the spread of COVID. This is because people are dumb and often disregard the rules (and those same people disregard other rules and are as such more likely to have an infection) or take off/pull down their masks precisely during the moments they're most vital (e.g. when talking to people).

Wear a mask if you're worried about COVID spreading. It's far from a perfect protection (and you really should be focusing more on just keeping your distance) but it does help.

No real evidence exists. Its inconclusive. Go and read WHO reports. There are some studies which report some reduction, then there are studies that don't.
Studies that look at countries and conclude that based on infections decreasing after masks becoming mandatory are garbage. There is no way to properly do the statistical analysis to account for all the other stuff.

Maybe they help a bit but not any significant amount, if the change was significant there shouldn't be any issues producing hard evidence for it!

People not using them properly even if willing is 1 big reason why they don't make much sense for healthy people to use. One thing is proven though, that they make people take more risks etc. and actually increase the spread.

In specific situations such as when preparing food in restaurants they should be used even outside of pandemic in my opinion. But the idea of completely healthy people everywhere (improperly) wearing a (improper)mask all the time(except when eating/drinking because that obviously prevents the spread) is just dumb!

There are now vaccines anyway and current variants aren't too dangerous.

my grandmother died of covid and my stepmother is a nurse who has ptsd from 1. knowing their hospital had to reject so many people who needed help into a hospital and 2. literally watching people die on a daily basis from their lungs failing

she'd literally return home every day and strip down in the garage and immediately shower because of how paranoid she was of one of us getting sick

things are much calmer now for sure but dont try to pretend there werent overcapacity hospitals for a long time due to covid
