Another possible explanation could be that farmer alts stop logging, but their mains still play.

Personally I welcome the change in pace. Got some more time now due to lack of farming, which I'm going to spend on building stuff and preparing infrastructure for the next season. It gives some variety too, as the plant-harvest loop can get a bit boring over time

I can imagine, though, this being a problem for hardcore players, who live inside the game. Who, unlike me, were not behind on anything and now suddenly have nothing to do

Ye, there's a lot of copes you can tell yourself if you try really hard to, but if you do a projection of the normal decay rate and compare it to a week after winter it's pretty self evident a lot of the people who left didn't come back. I'm pretty sure half of the people from my village who said they'll start playing again after winter are never logging in again.

The issue is pretty obviously that winter isn't fun. As unfun as farming is it seems ass-backwards to use a 5 day break from farming as a justification to fuck up 50% of the rest of the game for it

- more difficult to build stuff due to snow
- Key foragables don't exist
- Key animals do't exist
- PVP turned into a dreadful mess (legit no PVP happens during winter unless it's meteor or realm related, NO PVPers want winter PVP)
- Movement on skiis kinda funky, obligated to carry absurd amounts of water/food or you just full die for free because skiis are so resource intensive to use during ganks
- Map kinda fucked
- Various client features that are actually aids to make & maintain required to function if you care about not dying
- Fishing drastically more tedious
- Certain credos neigh impossible to progress
- Terraforming drastically more tedious
- Drastically lower chance of running into other players since no river highways

Basically the only things I can think of that aren't affected by winter are, like, mining and crafting. Even building is more tedious, even if you can still do it.

Also, the idea of "stocking up" for winter soudns good in theory, but for most people unironically planning around seasonality in a video game and feeling obligated to do stuff within a certain time-frame low key kinda gay?

I admit I have no real experience in PvP, so if that's a big thing for you then I guess you are more affected. From my point of view PvP is more of a "that's why we can't have nice things"

But even then I do not fully agree with points you listed (map, fishing, building and terraforming), although at this point arguing whether it's 50% or 27% is purely academic.

Well, I'm still having my fun. I wish there was something that could be done to make it more fun for others too.

I've wondered in the past, but now I'm positive we don't play the same game. The game I play has stuff like silkfarming and hemp buds that have historically required some kinda gay shit. I much prefer the macro planning for something happening in a few weeks.

first of all i am kinda enjoying not to meet people in this game, on the other hand. i never met so many passerbys as in winter, stoatbiomes are overrun, people on sleds looking for mammoth , and those wo dont take an brake in winter are chasing snowstorms cause, whirling snowflakes are kinda cheap and good, at least for alts .
winter isnt all that deserted of content as it was. but there is still an way to go, creedoquests are garbage, farmers dont want to do anything but farming still even if its 5 days an month, and youd need something else to forage but mediocre food , and even worse curios.
