Did you dig the "same grid" on every level, maybe your village's minehole shaft down to l9 or something like that?

This ! Now you're talking about this, this could be more or less the same grid. Let's say, about 30-50 tiles.

well i'm kinda jealous, this also explains the experience of some people never finding trolls in some worlds and drowning in them in others :D

That's what I've heard - no idea how that would interact with the Cave Hermit "increased chance to dig out a Troll."

EDIT:

As in, I mistook "node" for "there are are spots with guaranteed Trolls." If this assumption is true, there are regions in caves with higher chance, but not guarantee, to spawn a troll any time a tile is mined.

Best guess after observing some Cave hermit trolling is that it works similarly to pearl diver. Both tap into an additional pool. In pearls it's a separate local pool only accessible by pearldivers, for trolls it's troll nodes that only proc trolls if it's a cave hermit mining it out.

I'd say it is similar to gem hunter credo, nodes are the same, but there is higher chance per tile that you'll get it once you find the node.
So let's say you'll on average find 2 trolls in a node without credo and 4 trolls in the same node with it.
