Loftar has many AI agents working on it now and will surprise us any day now.

A wise man once said: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me one-hundred and thirty-nine times, uhh… ya can’t get fooled again.”

I believe Jorb has conceded a couple things in the past:

1 - They hit a dead end with OCO at some point, and since then, have not made meaningful progress. I vaguely recall this admission in a prior dev stream, which may have been years ago, so I'm not highly confident that it's still true but I think it's reasonably likely to be true.

2 - They don't often get together to discuss long term plans or goals. I know this isn't universally true, because they had obviously planned on doing the split world concept for at least a year prior to actually launching 16.1.

But my best guess is that Jorb's patch template just calls for some long term goal to go into that spot, and he's just shoving OCO in because he doesn't want to put anything else there. Which, at this point, the has become misleading if they aren't actually working on OCO.

I agree that Jorb should remove the "primary development direction" notice unless he actually has one that he wants to share. If OCO isn't actually being worked on it should be omitted going forward.

I'm not sure if server parallelization back then meant two servers running in parallel, or like more processes/databases/map chunks running in parallel for potentially infinite scaling of a single world.

I think one of the theoretical limitations on Haven's current ability to scale a single shard, which was acknowledged when Loftar was contemplating a steam release, was some server processes weren't adequately distributed in a way that could scale indefinitely.

Could be your interpretation is right though.

The last couple-few years have felt to me like the final days(years) of 2D when they'd quietly accepted (without properly informing anyone,) that the current iteration had outgrown its skeleton

The Steam launch, up until this recent flurry of activity, was the only tick in the other column for me

May then be worth familiarizing oneself with the concept of a “cash grab”. :)

That is to say: “We are going to abandon this old thing (at Some Point TM) so why not dump it on there and rake in a few final shinies.”
