It's called a "Tall Stump" and it can't be interacted with. You can Destroy it to get around 6 mirkwood blocks.

There's a mushroom(?) that spawns on these trees that makes matches!

Hm maybe because there hasn't been anything or anyone stopping toxic groups and when someone does unmask them they shut them down quickly with colossal support.
