The population was low before anyone even realized animals were changed. I'm sure that didn't help though

But after numbers of discussion of why someone does not return, they always point to "pvp test world made for pvp crowd only"

The pop returns mainly because of a new world, but this world has the lowest pop returning and simply in the conversations I've had they don't want to return because of pvp not because of test world.
sure I can give screen captures of people from my group saying this, Rosita even didn't want to play because of the dumb amounts of pvp this world was going to entitle.

I've been mad rambling how the PvE scean needs some way to deal with the PvP and be introduce or forced into it without nessary having to do it all the time.
the PvPers content is not fighting PvE players, that's not the correct direction of this game, but it's basiclly that and it's ruined the game for a lot of people and they just don't want to play and introduce new players to the game.
So we see a lack of players these last 2 worlds.

I think this world has been great those pve players that were on the fence of buying rage who did so. Most of the pvp I have encountered is not from vertern players. I think the goal should be to encourage the pve scene that pvp isn't as scary as it sounds and can be rather engaging and actually push people to care even more about progress. The issue i think is that the gap between progress from vets and new players is huge, some players have not even got tin yet for example. and needless to say you can't fight bronzes swords with clay knifes.

I think its been a great improvement this world. People were actively defending their bases more instead of just submitting, people would buy rage to help their friends out in fights where last world it would just be a "kill the guy with rage and loot their stuff" now its "we actually have to fight every person in this base which even if its just a bunch of naked can sway the odds. I actually think it should go further I see no reason to way rage shouldn't be a default skill.

Jorb is really, really bad at marketing. These were the prelude patch-notes they gave us:

Single continent spawn [didn't happen]
Changes to disempower characters without "Rage" in combat. The current line of thinking is to make it possible to "evict" characters without "Rage" from more or less anywhere. [reverted 16.1 to 16 and fixed locked houses being used as safe palis]
Reworked system for Gildings. [reverted 16.1 to 16 and added some slots to clothes]

Everyone was writing this off as an even bigger dud than W16.1 a full month before it even started, there wasn't even a listed experimental change for the "experimental" world. The radical travel changes were just posted a few hours before release.

And still, W16.1 showed nothing with their development cycle has changed, despite the "experimental" name. The most radical thing was they changed the global speed timer variable, which predictably made some things worse and some things better. They didn't adjust the obvious problems for 10 months, they just scrapped the whole thing including the good parts.

16.2 also added literally nothing for new content lol. I honestly don't think there's been a world like this before? The "new discoveries" thread is literally a tree and a stump with mushrooms on it and the first patch added an early study desk when the study desk we have is already something you can get in like an hour or 2 and some ZZZs above characters heads but even that is bugged and shows on dead people. This world honestly has the player count it deserves for all the thought and care that was put into it

It also doesnt help that this is the second w16.something and the first one was rly bad so ig it will be like this until w17.

I do think this world is the best one since w14. I wish they would get rid of thingpeace challenge tho.

I think a good PvP model is something like Albion Online - where PvP is in core of the gameplay, but if you desire to you can completely opt out of it by only doing content is safe areas while the best stuff is in most dangerous places with points of attractions such as meteors in here.

Somewhat of a safe area in HnH is your base behind the walls, but even if there's still lots of things to do it feels very restrictive. As well as kind of an opt-out is not turning on rage, but you still can get KO'd and stripped, which psychologically feels bad as it's happening without consent and most of the cases of unprepared PvP you feel like you had no way to respond, i.e. you didn't loose a skillful test of wit and game knowledge, you just got jumped in your expl + survival gear by a dude in full armor with b12 and full belt of water, maybe with his cronies waiting on a boat to overrun and block you.

In conclusion, my point is that IMO to increase player numbers and retention devs gotta deal with psychological aspect of PvP, not necessarily with core mechanics.

Its funny you mention albion because thats a game when people ask on the subreddit is it worth playing as a pve player everyone answers no. The gatherer/crafter types are all just expected to learn how to run from pvp, theres no big debate about it you just have to learn how to survive ganks if you want to play. The non pvp area is so low reward that its barely worth playing. However it is true that if youre wearing gatherer gear you get a very good escape/survival toolkit unlike haven.
