So instead of people talking about "end-game", there should be some real thought on how to make a permanent, interactive, ever changing, world. A world that gives you obstacles to overcome consistently, a never ending road!

Yeah

It wouldn't be so stale if there were seasons forcing us to change our playstyle every month.

Sounds like Don't Starve.
Well, why not though. Each month a season changes and the mobs get more severe.

That only works in single-player or, in case of MMO, only if you start at the beginning and play at the same speed as the game progresses.

It would be pretty rough for a new player starting in the middle of winter and while you could give fresh characters a sphere of influence to change the season from winter to spring in a small area around them any such mechanic is seriously open to abuse with alts. And if it's only aesthetic what's the point. But all seasons could be fairly mild like in Stardew Valley.

Too mild and this does not serve function of playstyle changings (useless).
Too severe and new player can not start game at all times (very not good).

Only working solution to season is for entire world to not be same season uniform e.g. 1/4 of map is in each season at all times and these will rotating. New player always spawn in spring region. Or if some south region is always warm, but I like this one less.

^It's already difficult for new players to survive if they start right now. Unless they already know what they're doing, but then that would also apply to winter.

The problem is exactly what cspan said: world progression is linear, not cyclic. Once you reach a certain point, there are no more challenges and no new features to discover. You cant rely on players to produce this kind of content. The patches are whats keeping people (p count graph shows it), but thats unsustainable in the long term.

Seasons that change every month or two, increasing or decreasing crop yield, adding seasonal variables to formulas, spawning unique animals and forageables, changing rare resource locations and node q and whatever else they come up with, would force us to change how we do things. It'd be like small monthly resets.

Regular weather changes could also do that. Something as simple as a weekly post saying "this will be a stormy week. Sand quality deteriorates, while clay is increased due to the rain. Structure decay increased dramaticaly. Archery and horse speed might also suffer penalties".

Or we could stay comfortable in this eternal summer where the world is completely static and you never need to leave your walls or worry about food and trade.

Because we represent what will happen to you in the future, after you will reach the end-game content.

With all respect, dear Freya, but I don't like the way "big factions" play H&H. All this "race to max stats and skills ASAP at world start" doesn't sounds like the way I think H&H should be played. If think most of old players just too tired of things, that make H&H so unique and breathtaking for new players. I was such new comer in w8 and still remember the feeling of getting through all stages of silkclothing or gathering my first q12 bough from my own tree. Yeap, in w9, Im a little bit tired of silkfarming, animal breeding, tree-farming and etc., so sometimes I just get one of my stallions and wander for an hour or two in random direction. Without any purpose. Just to travel and see the beauty of this world. I don't konw what or whom I may find. And it is still fun to me. How often do you do such walks? When do you login in H&H just to spend some hours for fun, not to make your duties?..
Believe me, you're not representing my future. Maybe, I will try to join some village in w10, just to taste it, but I will definitely quit the game that makes me bored, leaving the place for new players to gain their own first emotions from this great game, rather than trying to persuade devs to make the game fit the wishes of my bored tiredness.
Please don't take it close to heart, it is just a humble opinion of humble hermit. But I like to think it may be a silent voice of Willian Wallace among loud rumble of English noblemen ;)
English is neither my native lang, nor my best side...

There is no joy in aimlessness. Fun in game is to meet the goals and to win. This is my opinion, so it is not for saying I think your ways of fun are ''wrong'' for you. But to saying:

Please note that other player does not work this way you do. They do not get fun the way that you do. ''There is no pleasure except through pain.'' This is the motto I am using for game and for live.

Oh, you miss out a lot of pleasure. But, you know, whatever floats your boat )

Yup, right about that one. Everyone has his own "fun". The problem is, some people's "funs" intersect, conflict or impair other people's "funs". That's when it gets interesting =)

This is one of the better ideas I have seen on keeping the world viable in regards to constant exploration.
