Surely it is quicker to just eat garbage off of trees and bushes than to do that.

Well no it is not.
If you make 4-6 beacons once you can use all these alts and respawn on their old hearthfires the next day.

If you run to trees to eat shit that gives 75% energy you're almost losing an equal amount even running to that tree so alts are far better option. And making actual energy food = more convenience for the one doing labour but still the free alts would be better one time investment to get 30k energy free daily with 6 beacons initially
