Wow... some rank noobs in this conversation the last few pages on video game history. I'm not going to say Blizzard invented the RTS, because they didn't. I recall a couple others, one being from Microprose, before Warcraft came out, but they did define the genre, and it was the first game that played in this fashion. Everything since has been a variation on Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans.

I'll note the one I explicitly recall from Microprose would actually be more like the Paradox grand strategy games. Still considered an RTS, but different enough from the direction WC/SC, AoE, C&C, etc went to get a unique name.

@Someone that said something about rank nabs earlier... that's the nature of this game. You'll either catch up within a month or two of starting, or your not going to ever catch up because you don't dedicate yourself to an avatar in a game enough. World resets aren't going to change that. Don't ask for them for this reason, please. You'll be a bit saner for it.

Dune II came before Orcs and Humans and set the foundation for the classic RTS representation. Blizzard adapted the idea and added their own. My point was that Blizzard has yet to do anything truly unique or interesting off their own inspiration. They pretty much just duplicate other peoples work, and they used to be very good at it.

A reset though is completely unnecessary with the level cap, and even without it, as diminishing returns always meant you could catch up.
Laying flat.

Damn, I have all 3 on my shelf. I stand corrected. I had the dates flip-flopped in my head. Could have sworn WC was out about 92-93 as my brother was the one that brought it home originally and he was still in school. Wikipedia says 94, though. (With WC2 out a year later... swear it was more than two years between the two). But then C&C was out about the same time as WC2, and it was based on the Dune 2 engine. /shrug
