Mayhaps you were thinking of Pioneer probes? At one point Pioneer 11 or 12 was still functioning well beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Wow! I was thinking about the Pioneer probes. I totally got those two crossed :P
@sMartins: If you were asking me, no I never read them (I should tho, perhaps one day I'll get around to it.) I'm not in school. I dropped out of HS but learned enough to teach myself. School's definitely good in many ways. It just hasn't yet worked out for me.

Voyager 1 has entered the interstellar medium according to Wikipedia. Aiming to be amongst the first ten objects to leave the solar system myself tbph.

Also a high school dropout to be honest however I have since gained certificate level education in several fields and a technical trade. Education is no substitute for curiosity and just simply observing things around you. I'm a proponent of the belief that education ruins the potential for discovery by teaching you what and how to think. Still, the world needs mindless workers and that is what the education system produces.

Strangely perhaps the negotiation for my exit from schooling was decided by the fact that I was always questioning things and refused to accept incorrect or contradictory information without further explanation. The teacher said "He doesn't believe us and what we are teaching and I'm starting to question things myself. He needs to go out and find the answers for himself in the real world. We're ruining him." Of course the reality was much more complex but that was that and I agreed to leave.

I was causing too much trouble.

Again, education has its place however it is totally overrated.

Education for kids and youngs men comes from love. We may ask to JordanColes that studies psychology, what happen to us around 12-15 years old, eroticism comes in our life and we have to re-envision completly from scratch the world we knew before, and it's not an easy task.
Doesn't matter if the professor is a genius if he doesn't know how to fascinate kids. Rationality doesn't work, they can tell you whatever they want, like you are gonna ruin your life and those stuff if you don't study .... but we don't care at all, whatever the rational reason is .... if we are not fascinated by who is teaching us we won't learn anything, no matter what. We learn from imitation, first of all and love.

Finally I find some minds greater than my own who are working to prove what I believe about the Universe. Somewhat.
