There should be a mandatory theoretical test for each gun purchase.
There should be a stated reason for each purchase such as hunting or sport shooting.
Also there should be a psychiatric test every second year.

Ironically soldiers here are not allowed to own guns unless they have a license and a valid reason for having one.

I'm also inclined to believe that soldiers are just about the last kind of people you should trust to own a firearm. I should know, I was one. It's also pretty silly to believe that all people can't be trusted with a firearm, but soldiers are somehow more reasonable and less prone to violence than the average citizen.

Well, when I moved to BC I considered going through the process of getting a hunting rifle simply because camping in the mountains around grizzly bears and shit isn't the best idea if you have no means of defending yourself

Bear spray is likely a better alternative though
