I could write a couple hundred pages on all the micro-optimizations you can do to play competitively, but here's a broad set of goals:
1. Dedicated miner character(s) that generally keeps strength at 120 per Z level, i.e. on the day you've got access to -6 you're approximately 720 strength.
2. Miner has appropriate credos in timely fashion (masonry on -2, miner once you start to do free tunnel mining on -3 or -4.)
3. You've got a couple crafter characters able to hit all necessary carpentry, sewing, etc soft caps
4. You're appropriately feeding these characters with hunters that are also keeping top quality bones and hides coming in, as capped by your cutting tool.
5. You're doing appropriate dungeons to take advantage of tree seed bonuses and wax/beehive needs/bee bread to miner.
6. You're stashing all resources needed to build your minehole once the mine pyre timegate hits.
7. You're planting trees and remaking your herb table, potters wheel, rope walk with each generation, which you source from the new trees, your high quality quarryartz, and hide straps made from your best cutting tool.
8. You're using top quality clay, later coade clay, and even later bone clay, to make increasingly better kilns, smelters, tree planters pots, etc.
9. You're regularly doing exploratory mining as you hit new floors to find better sources of metal, coal, and the inputs for coade/bone clay.
I think that's a reasonable description of the broad things you need to do. If your unfamiliar with any of these processes that you need further description you're probably just not ready to play competitively except in a support capacity, assisting someone that is.
Further, to stay competitive in quality, you'll need to be doing all this at the appropriate time gates, not soft cap anything, and find all input ingredients within a reasonable range of the best you could expect to find at your Z level or tree generation.
