It's just like in a court of law--"Anything you say can and will be held against you"--in the court of public opinion.

To note: I don't think people have forgotten what it means to make a joke or to try and be funny. I think too many people who don't know what a joke is or what it means to be comedic (including all the irony and sarcasm) have too much sway over opinions on the Internet.

Still... such jokes are about as funny as crying "fire" in a crowded theater: it looks funny until someone actually gets hurt. (On the other hand, Johnny Knoxville getting kicked in the balls is always funny.)
