Yes but the debuff doesn't really have any functionality which enhances the noobs ability to enact vengeance while still punishing the thief.

I mean I'm a little blase about most crimes in the game except murder, so maybe I'm not impartial enough in this regard.

Does red-handed really offer anything to the victims of crime though?

Nope. Other than nerfing the character down to a noob level, there's not really anything you can do that will let a new guy try and get some vengeance for acts against their person or property. Even then, skill will win (assuming the person doing the offensive actions has skill and isn't some idiot thief).
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

From another angle, doesn't having your things stolen draw a new player into one of the largest elements of gameplay?

I mean I can understand people ragequitting after having their character killed and all their stuff broken, but losing a crate of semi-valuables doesn't seem to me like something a player would be unable to recover from. It should also motivate a player to engage in more of the social aspects of the game as well, although it does seem a lot of newer players are unaware of the forums existence or are reluctant to use them.

During W9, I accidentally mined a tunnel between 2 villages. Guess what, one of them had open mine and second one fastly found that I made such a thing. In a matter of an hour, everything was stolen from the 1st village of any valuable. The thief didn't even go punished, as he managed to repel nidbanes. But what I heard from, he was close to dying.

So my conclusion is, that thief, if happens, it's on the bigger scale. No one steals from noobs if they can have the same stuff x2 better without thief.
Often during world I saw entire places thief'd, not just only one box.

So in the example you have given what does red-handed debuff do for the victims?

Does post I quote have anything about red-hand? no.

I never was stupid enough to try red-hand stuff against active players. Nor people I am friends with.

Ah ok, me either but... I'm trying to find arguments for red-handed debuff being in the game because it doesn't seem to do anything at all other than be annoying.

inorder to understand red hand you would have had to play during the times of world 5-7

where players would travel from one side of the map to the other to kill a guy in a swamp then TP home.
or travel hours to finding a settlement just starting and raiding it.

It was not to prevent you. it was to add rick into action.
rick<reward.

People use to go into random claims without walls. drag everything liftable into the house then smash it.
then tp home.

Red hand was the little wall to make you think. Do I really feel like its worth the debuff.

Yea, this angle I can understand. I lost two towns in Salem when walls were like butter and braziers did nothing. I just don't think stealing a crate of goods or even looting a town is comparable to leveling it or killing someone. The example given was petty theft, but I do agree that something needed to be done to make destroying things and killing people as costly an exercise as leveling the character and building the town.

Isn't the hardest part just the walls and everything inside is significantly less durable?
