If the bats didn't always aggro in groups, sneaking might be safer than fighting.

This one time, I was making Mirkwoods and pumped my stealth for better quality. Since then bats haven't aggroed me.

Could be a coincident, but I never just walk or sneak past bats (they don't pose any danger to me so I just keep running).
