I'm not a medical expert, but if I recall my old biology class, extra chromosomes in a species almost always is a bad thing. There's many other conditions than Downs from this anomaly.

Actually, considering how many ways chromosomes can theoretically duplicate during reproduction, there's very few chromosomal disorders. The vast majority are miscarried before birth.
