If it's as Robben says and all attacks have a travel time, then that certainly explains it for Darkfall, but yes, I would also be curious how an FPS does it, where attacks are indeed pretty much instantaneous.

How is this not abusable as fuck with client mods, though? Does it just rely on ingame moderation and heuristic cheat detection?

There were no client mods, at least no public ones

Not all games hand over their client to modders you know lol

Here is another video of one of the longest/most intense fights I had in Unholy Wars
https://youtu.be/6o5Kd4gpeuI?list=PLXuB ... VRJgjSIB65
(Around 4:34 I finally get them to fight back seriously)

There is an arc to bowshots and melee hits and there is a travel time after you release the bow. There are a few insta-shot rays in the game but they have a short distance.
There were some aimbots, but they were mainly used for stickybacking in melee since the collision boxes of players move around so much that it's not really possible with a bow. You'd miss more shots than you'd land at medium range.

Darkfall was great honestly, the devs were just terrible in every possible way

An aimbot is still client ''modification.''

I suppose I mean that there weren't a ton of different versions of the default client which were heavily modded by the players to give them an edge

Some hacks did exist but aimbots weren't common or accurate and the majority of players didn't use anything other than the default client to play the game

Sorry. Sounded like you were just a naysayer. I don't think weapon travel time necessarily negates this issue because I think somebody could just integrate that into their script pretty easily? Anyways I am also curious how this stuff works in general.

I'm sure you're aware that Haven had client mods before I even made the source code public. I generally find it weird how even far more popular MMOs don't seem to have this happen to them to at all the same degree.

For instance, I recently watched a video of Albion, and it seems to me that they can't even rotate the camera and have treetops right in their eyes all the time, and yet people just seem to accept that there.

Maybe because most MMOs suck and smart coders don't waste their time there? Or maybe it's because the more hardcore MMOs cause people to want an edge over other players?

One thing to keep in mind though is the stuff happening behind the scenes. I'm sure most MMOs have somebody exploiting the shit out of them who isn't telling anyone.

Still though, it would seem that such a thing would be much more prevalent. Strange indeed.

Look at all the issues Blizz has had with WoW with hacks, bots, and such. I can tell you that Verant/SOE/Daybreak have had issues. No matter the size of your game, someone is going to reverse your client and figure out how to hack it. Smart programmers are an odd bunch that get fixated on the strangest things. They don't all build world changing apps, systems, and code.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

You know, sometimes camera is fixed not because someone was not able to do this. For example in Path of Exile the camera is fixed because their game designers decided that this will bring more "oldschool feeling" into the game (Also they used this fact to optimize their static 3d models for the specific angle only to gain more performance)

Yes, Blizzard have problems with bots. But i think 10000 botters out of 10000000000 players is acceptable situation. At least it is much better then 300 out of 500 we had in legacy. For sure you cannot be save from client modification, but every barrier you add to prevent it requires more work to pass it. Right now everyone who knows java or anything about programming can go and add something into the client. But what if there will be no source code and the hafen.jar will be obfuscated every week with the new namelist every time? Then you can only work on protocol level (if you know it) i believe. You will spend more time to deobfuscate the code every time then you will actually play with this version.

Planetside2 is a MMOFPS and it doesn't really have a problem with aimboters. Sure, an occasional cheater pops up here and there, but they get quickly banned so running into one is very rare.
