My mythology knowledge is eluding me, or it's just been too damn long and I've forgotten it, but weren't they Greek in origin, or something like that, maybe Gaelic...?

there were plenty of bears all around europe back in the times

theres a polish book "krzyżacy" about some polish guys fighting the german knights and theres a chapter about hunting a bear!

and theres polish saying "nie dziel skóry na niedźwiedziu" which meaning is to not be happy with the profits before you actually finish the business!
